The Masked Marauders - The Masked Marauders (Diety/Reprise 6378 - 1969)

This was definitely the kind of inside joke that Lans appreciated. This copy is a cut-out (clipped corner). There were a few pops here and there but quite listenable. Amazon has a CD version for $27 and the used LPs are selling for 10 bucks and up.

Flatt & Scruggs - Greatest Hits (Columbiia CS9370 - 1966)

This puppy from Lans' collection didn't have an inner sleeve but after a round with the Discwasher, the vinyl quality was surprisingly good. It doesn't look like this package is available on CD but certainly a best of CD could be had.

Bobbie Gentry - Ode To Billie Joe (Capitol ST2830 - 196?)

I think this album has been in the family since it came out back in 1967 when the title track hit number one on the pop singles chart. My brothers and I no doubt played it on the stereo that we affectionately referred to as "the record eater" in our pre hi-fi era. The cover is in remarkably good condition but the vinyl is average at best. That means that to a casual listener it would probably sound like what they think of when they think of listening to old scratchy LPs. I pulled this out because I saw Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson singing a duet version of the song from CMT's "Crossroads" program of 2007 where Reba mentioned that Bobbie Gentry wrote "Fancy". Both Ode to Billie Joe and Fancy appear on a Greatest Hits album Amazon has for 7 bucks. This album is currently selling on Amazon for $9 and a half.

The Byrds - Preflyte (Together Records ST-T-1001 - 1963)

This was mine and I probably bought it because it was in the cheapie bin and I was favorably disposed to The Byrds... but it's not like I bought their BEST albums. Still the vinyl sounded like new although there might have been a little skip or perhaps it was that bug that I saw walking on the disc when I flipped it over to do the B side. There isn't a copyright date on this disc. The data coming down from the Net said 1968 and the liner notes mention 1963. I believe both may be right. It was recorded in '63 and released as an "Archival" thing in '68. Amazon has it in stock for 14 bucks.

On a second listen, there seems to be an issue in "The Reason Why" at about 1:48 into the track. I can't tell if it came from the LP that way or was introduced downstream of there.

Emmylou Harris - Gliding Bird (Emus ES-12052 - 1979)

Probably some time in the '90s, Lans put this on a tape for me. He'd put the Gram Parsons (International Submarine Band reissue) on one side and a Clarence White and the Kentucky Colonels on the other side and used this album as filler. I ripped it from that tape back in December of 06. Since it was filler, this album was missing one track. I went back to the original vinyl and re-transcribed to pick up the missing track and I photographed the cover. I once looked this album up on the net and somewhere found that there is a version which is very rare and worth a lot of money. This one is dated 1979 and so I'm assuming that this isn't the original and premium priced version. That would probably be the original release which would have been 1968 I think.

I've had this since it was issued. It was a corporate thing from Dupont. The bonus tracks are from a National Geographic sound sheet of a similar era.

Jimi Hendrix - Nine to the Universe (Reprise - 1980)

I decided to take a break from the Dawg Music and delve into something quite different. The condition was "Like New". This one is currently unavailable from Amazon and at least one customer review says it has never been reissued on CD. However when I went to get track information from within Meda Player, it found an album with 10 tracks where the first 5 match my LP. That kind of smacks of a CD with bonus tracks. They are:

Further investigation indicates that a UK label called "Reclamation" issued a CD titled "Message From Nine to the Universe" (RECD 1012).

Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks - Original Recordings (Epic 1969)

Yes, this is the first album... the one with "I Scare Myself" and "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away". There were a few vinyl artifacts that I heard but mostly it sounded very nice. There is just one reseller on Amazon offering this album on CD and they are asking $50. Did I mention that Lans had this one?

The Doors - The Doors (MFSL original release date 1967 on Elektra)

This is from Richard D.'s collection. There was some dust but gerenally speaking quite listenable. Amazon: $11. Per Wikipedia:

The album is generally thought of as the band's best work, in addition to being one of the greatest debut album's by any band. It's also considered to be one of the quintessential albums of the counterculture movement/Social Revolution. In 1998 Q magazine readers voted The Doors the 93rd greatest album of all time; in 2003 the TV network VH1 placed it at number 60. In 2003, the album was ranked number 42 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Miles Davis - Seven Steps to Heaven (Columbia 1963)

Another one of mine. According to Wikipedia, "This is the last of Davis's studio albums which relies substantially on standard tunes - once Wayne Shorter joined the quintet in 1964, tunes on studio recordings were almost always composed by members of the group." It certainly feels a world away from Bitches Brew (1969) and Agharta (1975). I think there might have been a little skip in "Baby Won't You Please Come Home" (side B, track 2 and/or CD track 5) but overall the quality of the LP was very good. This single album is currently available from Amazon for $12.

Miles Davis - Agharta (Columbia 1975)

This one comes from my collection. It kind of intimidates me at the same time as it intrigues me. It's so far out but there's a kind of rocking funkyness to it that seems to offset the free-form aspects. The vinyl was in very good condition. This double album is currently available as a two-CD set and Amazon is selling it for 20 bucks.

For the completeness of my records I'm documenting the fact that when I burned Agharta, I allowed the two tracks on the B side of disc one to run together. Even factoring that in, I cannot account for the significant differences between the track times on Amazon and the track times on my copy of disc 1.

I went ahead and purchased the three tracks on disc 1 from iTunes so I could compare the LP version with the downloaded version which I haven't yet done.

Jeff Beck - - Truth/Beck-Ola (EMI - 1991)

Per Amazon.com: 1991 EMI release, a two-on-one featuring the first two albums by the band he formed after leaving the Yardbirds in 1967, 1968's 'Truth' and 1969's 'Beck-ola'. 17 tracks total.Other members in the band include Rod Stewart, Ron Wood, Nicky Hopkins, Tony Newman and Mick Waller. Tracks include ['Morning Dew', ] 'Shapes Of Things', 'I Ain't Superstitious', 'Beck's Bolero', 'You Shook Me', 'Jailhouse Rock' & 'All Shook Up'.

There was a two-fer LP predecessor to the above mentioned CD offering. The vinyl was pretty nearly flawless and it fit on a single CD. The individual CD's are going for 11 bucks each on Amazon or the combined CD (labeled as an import) is $18.

Delaney & Bonnie & Friends - D & B Together

OK, maybe I deserved a hard time for some recent selections: Boston, BTO, etc. Well this one's different I though. This album was consistent with Lans' taste and holds up reasonably well but... in a somewhat disturbing twist, this album has the tune "Groupie" which later came to be known as "Superstar". This song was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell and fell just short of topping the pop charts for the Carpenters. Ouch! Vinyl condition: Very good.

Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs/Barrett

An early 70s release that combined Barrett's two pre-Pink Floyd solo albums onto a double album. I decided I had to break out of the A's rather than finish up with the one remaining Airto album. Parts of this proto-Floyd album are remarkably hypnotic and parts are just pretty weird and demonstrate Barrett's eccentric nature. With headphones on, the vinyl was a bit scratchy sounding in places, but overall, quite listenable. I think Lans had this album originally but I acquired it from him when he converted his music collection over to cassette in the mid 70's. Both of these albums seem to be generally available on CD for about $11.

I bought this in my Beatles completist phase. Which was probably about when this thing came out. It's in pretty good condition yet it has a bootlegish quality about it although it appears to be quite legitimate at the same time. The cover art is of my own capture on June 6, 2008. (Recaptured on june 29, 2008 with better setup and to get the back cover.)
